My dedication to the fair advocacy of Latinos in the justice system is the primary focus of my career. During my studies in Criminal Justice, I realized that Justice for Latinos is dependant on advocacy which upholds the dignity and respect we Latin American’s deserve. I will graduate in June 11, 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Monroe College. A very influential aspect of my professional background was my enlistment in the United States Air Force, which facilitated my immigration to mainland United States. I use my experiences in the military to deliver advocacy that is seasoned in discipline, team work, and organization. One main area I am personally dedicated to is the work of advocacy for Latinas survivors of Domestic Violence.
I have performed advocacy work for survivors of domestic violence, LGBT community members and immigration rights with organizations such as Sanctuary for Families, Independent Workers Movement of Queens, Las Buenas Amigas Lesbianas and Coalicion de Igualdad LGBT de Queens. Other volunteer projects have included performing Poll Watch with the New York Democratic Lawyers Committee and the East Harlem-Presidential Inauguration Book Drive for PS-102.
In conclusion, let me sum up Shanali Inchaustegui: A woman proud of her Puerto Rican heritage, ready to add her unique narrative to the field of public interest advocacy.
